RRIF Investment Management fees

Hi Tim,
I currently pay a fixed % fee for my RRIF for investment management. I pay it by cheque from my chequing account so as to not reduce the RRIF total. I read an older article of yours (circa 1996) that this could cause problems with CRA by paying this fees outside the RRIF. Is that still the case?
